Local Newspaper Websites Continue to Dominate

newspaper computer resized 600A report released earlier this week by The Media Audit, shows that newspapers continue to come out on top when compared to other local markets.  The report, which was released at the Newspaper Association of America’s annual Xchange conference, covers the 2011 Media Audit surveys.  While television websites are providing competition for newspapers, newspapers took 16 of the top 25 spots.

The study also found a direct correlation between the strongest websites and their print penetration.  Newspapers with strong websites also showed over 60% reach in their markets. This shows that local newspapers and their websites are still considered reputable and relevant to people in the community.  Despite facing new challenges from improved mobile technology and television, newspapers are the still the largest news providers in the local marketplace.

TheState.com is the #1 local website in the entire state of South Carolina, not just the local Columbia market.  Make sure you are reaching our readers with interactive ads on our website!

DIY Consumers Getting Down To Work This Spring

home improvement resized 600In Q4 2011, National Association of Home Builders’ Remodeling Market Index rose by more than five points from its Q3 2011 level, reaching its highest point in almost five years.  To better understand the DIY consumer, Burst Media surveyed 2,029U.S.adults aged 18 or older in February 2012 to discover more about their upcoming DIY plans.

According to their findings, nearly one-third of all respondents said they definitely or probably would complete a DIY project within the next six months.  This includes 38% of respondents who are home owners and 15.7% of renters.  Additionally, the survey found that DIY projects are most popular among higher income segments. Of those reporting a household income of $100,000 or more, 39.3% claimed they would undertake a DIY project in the next six months.

For inspiration, respondents named the Internet as their top resource for home improvement ideas and inspiration.  In addition, those surveyed also cited home improvement stores and newspapers as resources.

college kids resized 600According to a study conducted earlier this year, by residential and student marketing agency Catalyst, found that 53% of college students surveyed ranked search engines as the most important source in helping them find a place to live. Not only are search engines the top resource for apartments, 98% of those surveyed listed Google Search as the place they go to for any information online.  Additional research from ebary showed that in 2011, 85% of college students worldwide went to Google to look for information for class assignments.

With college students being heavy users of search engines, search engine marketing or SEM is an ideal way to target this audience.  Our search engine marketing service, Palmetto Clicks places an advertisement for your business website across a wide network for over 30 major search engines.  These ads can be targeted to consumers specifically searching for your product or service.  For more information on how we can help you get found, contact our online ad expert!

Interactive Formats Perform Better

polilte banners resized 600New data from MediaMind is showing that static banners underperform when compared to newer, more interactive formats.  More-interactive formats, such as homepage takeovers, interactivity and creativity see higher engagement and dwell rates.  A homepage takeover increased dwell rates 32% over static banners and average dwell duration increased 67%.  Even bigger increases in dwell rates were shown for video extender ad formats.  This type of format allows users to expand a video ad, making it easier to watch.  Pushdown banners and other interactive formats were also proven to increase dwell rates and average dwell duration.

Dwell rate and dwell duration were used to measure user engagement.  Dwell rate measures the percentage of rich media impressions users intentionally engaged with by touch, interaction or click.  Meanwhile, dwell duration looks at the length of time the user remains exposed to the ad after first engaging with it.

The State Media Company has several highly interactive and rich media formats available including billboard or takeover ads, videos, flyouts and much more.  These unique ad formats are guaranteed to get you and your business noticed. Check out our online media kit to see interactive examples.

Newspaper Websites Growing & Attracting Upscale Readers

Newspaper and Computer resized 600Research released earlier this work shows that newspaper websites averaged more than 111 million unique visitors in the fourth quarter of 2011.  According to the Newspaper Association of America and data provided by comScore, this is an increase of more than 6 million compared with the same period a year ago.  Data also shows strong performances in other key engagement and demographic metrics, with 63& of all adult Internet users visiting newspaper websites.

When compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, newspaper website usage increased by more than 3 million average daily visitors, or almost 15%.

The data also showed the growing appeal of newspapers’ online content for engaged, informed and affluent readers.  Almost 70% of Internet users with household income above $60,000 are reached by newspaper websites and that number climbs to 75% when looking at household incomes above $100,000.
